The Old Hemlock Foundation
(“Foundation”) was provided for under The Kathryn H. Evans Trust Agreement
dated March
25, 1999. The Foundation’s purposes include charitable,
scientific and educational. The Foundation
will make distributions to several section 501(c)(3) organizations for
scholarships and other charitable and educational purposes. The Foundation
shall maintain 230 acres of real estate situated on the Brandonville Pike
in Preston County, West Virginia, which is known as “Old
Hemlock.” Old Hemlock was the home
of George Bird and Kathryn Harris Evans.
Mr. Evans was a noted artist, author, outsdoorsman and dog breeder. Mrs. Evans co-authored and edited
books. Old Hemlock contains virgin
hemlock trees and is to be maintained in its natural state as a nature and
wildlife preserve. The house located
on Old Hemlock was built in about 1782 and is the oldest residence in its
state of preservation in Preston
County, West Virginia.
The Mission of the Old
Hemlock Foundation
The
Old Hemlock Foundation mission is to maintain the home of George Bird and
Kay Evans, also to promote his writings and philosophy of hunting. After the home maintenance, funds will be
used for scholarships to WVU Medical School,
scholarships to Bruceton area school
students, support to the Preston County Humane Society and cultural/literary
support for Bruceton
School. In addition to these, the Old Hemlock
foundation will work:
1. To preserve the natural environment by acquiring and
maintaining ecologically significant undeveloped land, forests, and other
natural areas;

2. To promote conservation and protection
of natural resources;
3. To preserve the natural ecosystems found on undeveloped land,
forests and other natural areas;
4. To prevent and eliminate damage to the
environment;
5. To preserve and protect from commercial development
acquired and maintained undeveloped land, forests, and other natural areas
by forming nature and wildlife preserves for scientific and educational
purposes;
6. To help further educate the public by understanding and
studying various ecological systems and natural resources through the
preservation of the same;
7. To
help support the education of individuals residing in Preston County, West Virginia;
8. To preserve historically significant structures; and
9. To do and perform all acts, things and business as may be
necessary, incidental to or convenient to the foregoing purposes including
the transaction of any or all lawful business.
